Just finished watching 1984… Causes me great concern even more than I had before about our government… Anyone else?
I have read 1984 and Brave New World, and frankly I’m not sure which one is more prophetic.
Haven’t seen it, just read the book.
You can find parallelisms but I don’t think it’s a tangible concern. There is too much information flow for any of that to come to fruition

For it to happen the government would have to shut down internet, it could but the chances are slim in an established democracy. We could see this happen in a smaller already dictatorship like country and it already is happening in NK for example. But the shear scale of the u.s makes me think that this is near to impossible. It would take a lot of time and propaganda to take all that freedom away
Yes…although…The technological possibilities of surveillance and data collection and storage surely surpass what Orwell could imagine today
Yes it is far more reaching than what he could imagine. I think though that only a shut off of the internet could possibly bring on such a possibility…and shutting off the internet isn’t as easy as you’d think, especially in a nation that doesn’t have government run utilities.
Of course everything is possible but I’d say it’s improbable at least in our lifetime
Definitely read the book for the full effect. Like Willow, I have read both 1984 and Brave New World. Of the two, Brave New World is the more likely outcome, though I imagine it would be a mix of both. Huxley actually wrote a letter to Orwell explaining why his vision was more accurate and, after time, I’ve come to agree. It’s worth checking out.
